Penmist Lowchens

N.E.Lancashire

We first came across the Lowchen whilst visiting Mr & Mrs Scales (Pimstan) to buy a Bichon to show and whilst showing her we came in to contact with Val Blore and when she later told us she had a litter of Lowchens we went to have a look. We had two dogs to look at and decided on Movalian Black Pepper We started to show him in 1981 an he performed very well in the ring. We were looking forward to campaigning him with our Setters and Bichons but he decided that he wanted to be top dog at home instead of going to shows. He liked to spend his time grooming our rescue cats and in return they would often sit with him so he had plenty of feline friends during his 16 1/2 years. When he died in 1997 we had already decided to carry on showing small dogs due to our back problems.

In 1998 we looked at various small breeds and hearing from our vet of Margaret Jacksons litter we went to look at them and decided to return to showing Lowchens again.

Sammy's First Christmas

We picked out a dog puppy who became Banacek Mercury Blues and he started his show career very well and gained a Best Puppy in Show at under 9 months. After losing his puppy coat he took a long time to grow a new one but he still managed some firsts at a number of championship shows including the 2000 Club show under Mrs E Banks.

We decided in 2001 to look for a bitch who would compliment his lines so we could breed our first Lowchen litter.

We had previously had a miss-alliance between our Lowchen dog and Bichon bitch which produced a beautiful gold dog puppy who turned out to look like an Havanase.

It took nearly two years before we found a bitch with lines which we thought would give us our ideal type of Lowchen combining breed type with good movement so often overlooked in show dogs today.

In 2002 Margaret Jackson informed us that her dog Bobby whom we particularly liked had been mated to a Davia a bitch and that the lines might be of interest to us. Having studied the pedigree and seeing that it would compliment Sams we decided to go and have a look.

We brought back in December 2002 a bundle of mischief whom we named Leonnie. Her showing career was very short due in part to looking after my father and my own health problems and we decided that it would be a good time to mate her. Unfortunately Sammy had developed a problem which we had not noticed. On taking him to our vets we were adviced that the shrinking testicles might be cancer so he was castrated. She has since been mated twice but it seems she prefers to mother our elderly English Setters. In 2007 we will again be looking for a dog puppy and start all over again !

An introduction to your webmaster (Bill)

I originally started showing English Setters in the mid seventies with Cynthia but lost interest in the showing side of dogs. Having been an amateur photographer since about the age of twelve I started to combine photography with dog showing, taking pictures for inclusion in the dog press unfortunately I was becoming more involved with my real job so had to give it up.
In the early eighties I became interested in computers and then combined this with another interest I have had for many years "pedigree research" , I now collect pedigree's like a little boy collects cigarette cards and have an on-line data base of Lowchen pedigree's.

In mid 2004 I heard that the Lowchen Club UK was looking for someone to help set up a web site, I saw this as an ideal opportunity to pay back to a dog society for all the years we had been showing dogs, so I offered my services for free.

Now for 2007 we have the begining's of "Web Pages for Members" not only will this give members a web presence but we can show a little of our dogs to the world.

Please give it your support.
